Ramsey, (Arthur) Michael
(1904–88)
   Archbishop and Theologian.
   Ramsey was educated at the University of Cambridge. He was ordained to the Anglican ministry in 1928 and he taught theology at the Universities of Durham and Cambridge. He was consecrated Bishop of Durham in 1952, Archbishop of York in 1956 and he was Archbishop of Canterbury between 1961 and 1974. He was regarded as one of the most eminent English theologians of his day and his books include The Gospel and the Catholic Church, The Resurrection of Christ and God, Christ and the World. During his time at Canterbury, the Church of England changed over to synodical government. Although the scheme for Anglican and Methodist reunion failed, under his leadership there was a notable improvement in relationships between the various Christian denominations.
